The Ugly Truth about going Green: why and how Media companies should invest in ESG objectives

Why’s it ugly?

Firstly, like most things worth achieving, it’s the long term goals that count most.

Secondly, it requires new ways of working and that always requires extra effort.

Why invest in ESG?

It makes economic sense: companies who invest in addressing ESG issues invariably gain improved stock market performance and increased profitability in the future (see report published by Khan, M., Serafeim, G. and Yoon, A.  here )

How?

Prioritise ESG goals in accordance with your organization’s strategy:

If you’re a production company you’ll be investing in managing environmental impact to demonstrate to your potential content buyers that you’re reducing emissions, thereby win their confidence and hopefully their business.

If you are a content buyer and responsible for delivering content to the consumer, you’ll want to:

  1. Ensure the content you select reflects your ESG goals eg. increase by 10% by FY25 content with environmental topics
  2. Ensure your brand reflects your ESG goals, eg. increasing the representation of diversity in protagonist roles
